BARPIMO embraces the Lignicoat project aimed at pioneering bio-coatings

This European project will enable the production of 100% bio-based coatings, currently non-existent in the world.

BARPIMO has joined Lignicoat, a research project currently being carried out in Europe. The aim is to create pioneering coatings with a focus on sustainability. Formulated with natural resins and bio-additives, they will offer improved fire and corrosion resistance. An innovative and environmentally friendly approach.

What is Lignicoat?

An initiative backed by the European Commission, the project has received funding from Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Thanks to its implementation, BARPIMO will have the opportunity to develop a resin that is 100 % natural, just like the different polyurethane, alkyd and epoxy coatings.

Leading this ambitious initiative is Tecnalia, a technology laboratory focused on testing products such as the ones it is now trying to devise. It is responsible for coordinating the project, having proposed both BARPIMO and other leading technology companies to participate in its development.

At the heart of this research, which was launched before the summer and is expected to continue for three years, is lignin, a polyphenolic polymer that is the second most abundant polymer on the planet. It originates from wood. It can be found in the cell walls of plants, to be exact. Despite its potential, this substance is underestimated. Although that is about to change, as their applications are being developed.

Why is this study so important?

Its importance lies in the fact that it aims to create a range of resins, varnishes and paints that are not currently available on the market. Although sometimes coatings are labelled as natural or environmentally friendly, the truth is that they are not entirely so. In reality, its natural content makes up only about 40 % of its composition. Lignin-based coatings, currently in production, will be.

New societal demands and market trends require innovative solutions that respond to the need for sustainability. It covers aspects as diverse as conserving energy and resources, minimising waste, achieving maximum efficiency, and using products that are considered renewable and non-toxic. In this case, a further step is taken, as the focus is on high resistance and circular economy. In short, all-round benefits.

In line with the EU's 2050 strategy

Environmental friendliness and footprint reduction are some of the goals of the project coordinated with Tecnalia, as well as of the products to be produced as a result. This is expected to lead to a significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions mainly due to replacing petrochemicals with renewable chemical substitutes. The impacts stemming from their production will decrease. This is therefore in line with the European Union's 2050 strategy. By then, it is intended for member countries to be climate neutral.

These are some of the benefits of using a biopolymer that is widely available in the world. It is emerging as the perfect alternative to non-renewable resources. This is the case for fossil fuels, which are in gradual decline and are bound to disappear sooner or later.

At the forefront of innovation

BARPIMO is one of the firms chosen to join a multidisciplinary work team. Excited about the challenge ahead, they want to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of using lignin as a base for producing bio-based resins, convinced that this will lead to different applications linked to the functional coatings they market. 

Their company philosophy places great importance on issues such as RDI development and commitment to the environment. This dual approach, which goes back to their origins, is perfectly in line with Lignicoat, whose fields of application include architecture, and decorative and industrial coatings. This triple axis covers everything from floor and ceiling finishes to wood and metal furniture, walls, terraces, automobiles, household appliances, doors, different machines, etc. The list is expected to expand and cover new fields of application.

Lignicoat strengthens BARPIMO's track record of innovation and technology. Thanks to this experience, they will position themselves in the market with pioneering products that will represent a before and after in the world of coatings. The future is knocking at the door and BARPIMO does not want to miss a unique opportunity to contribute to the circular economy and sustainability of the sector.
