BARPIMO, FRESH AIR BRUSH STROKES

Barpimo has started an ambitious technological project to develop varnishes and paints that integrate nanotechnology in their formulation thereby enabling, thanks to the absorption of light energy, a reduction in environmental pollution, the elimination of odours, and an extension in the good condition of the surfaces where they are applied.
 
This project is co-financed by FEDER Funds and is developed in collaboration and with the assistance of the company Avanzare Innovación Tecnológica, which runs the certified laboratory Ensatec, specialised in certification and calibration testing services, with ILAC-ENAC certification.

The European Environment Agency (EEA) warns that around 90% of the EU's urban population is exposed to concentrations of pollutants that the World Health Organisation (WHO) considers harmful to health. In fact, it states that pollution causes the premature death of 400,000 people a year on the European continent.
 
Barpimo's cutting-edge paints contain photocatalytic particles, which are capable of eliminating substances that are harmful to humans.
 
What is a photocatalytic paint and how does it work?

It is a surface coating that purifies the air by means of a chemical process activated by sunlight and that works in a similar way as photosynthesis where plants can transform carbon dioxide into oxygen when they come into contact with light. This process is called photocatalysis. It is an oxidation reaction that occurs when three factors occur simultaneously: Titanium dioxide (which acts as a catalyst), oxygen, and light, whether ultraviolet or visible light.

Harmful particles in the environment settle on the surface of pavements or buildings. If the floor or façade of these buildings has a photocatalytic paint, sunlight will activate the titanium dioxide that this type of paint contains, which will transform the harmful particles (nitrogen oxides) into harmless ones (oxygen).

Urban surfaces photosynthesis, as some call it, in addition to reducing pollution, helps buildings avoid becoming dirty or darkened as a result of pollution. Therefore, in addition to reducing pollution, building maintenance costs are lowered.

Photocatalytic coatings can be applied to asphalt, pavements, sidewalks, ceramics, façades, building roofs, urban furniture, etc. Also for objects, both metal and wood, such as bicycles, containers, litter bins, traffic lights, bridges, benches, etc.

Due to their self-cleaning and decontaminating properties, photocatalytic paints are the right choice for engineering companies, town halls, and public administrations.

Barpimo researches in order to design the range of water-based photocatalytic paints that have the same covering properties, colour, aesthetics, and ease of application as a traditional decorative paint, but providing the surface on which it is applied with differentiating properties, such as decontaminating, deodorising, self-cleaning, and with a CE marking certificate.

At the same time, a transparent photocatalytic varnish that is also water-based would be launched on the market, which is especially suitable for its application in civil works (buildings, streets, etc.), cultural heritage (monuments, historic buildings, etc.), and in general in all those places in which the aim is not to repaint or alter the aesthetics of the surface to be treated, but to prolong its good condition and promote environmental care of the surrounding areas.

There are currently similar alternatives in the market, but with low yields (around 20%). Thus, Barpimo wants to go further and expects to exceed 50% yields in the whole range of photocatalytic paints. Laboratory tests confirm that it is even possible to achieve 80% effectiveness yields. 

Urban scenario

In order to carry out the relevant tests and measurements, Barpimo will build an urban scenario at its facilities in Nájera to perform a real and quantifiable simulation of the developed paints effectiveness, which will be open to interested clients and organisations. A stage protected by a maximum transmittance glass to ensure maximum sunlight efficiency will be installed inside and, separated by a glass, two urban scenarios will be placed: One of these scenarios will be painted with photocatalytic paints, while the other will be painted with traditional paints. A certain amount of combustion gases will be introduced in each of them and a real time meter will be placed to monitor the degradation of these gases in the scenario painted with photocatalytic paints.

Everyone is now looking at Spain

Although photocatalysis has been used for years in countries such as Japan or Italy, its widespread implementation in our country is being delayed because the crisis has left municipalities without the necessary funds to undertake the change.

In recent years, Spain has made progress in this field, but more focused on research than on the application of the technique, developing research projects such as that of Barpimo.

Considering the hours of sunshine in our country, this is the perfect formula to effectively fight against the pollutants generated in large cities.
